Creation Sings

 Psalm 19

The heavens are declaring the glory of God everyday. Today is our last day of Creation Season. It has been a season full of reflection and pushing ourselves into the broader community around us. We have lamented the harm we have caused, we have praised the wonders of creation, and we have planted hope, which is essential watering for the seeds we have planted.

Now it is time to rejoice. To take in the whole of it and notice the depths we don't normally pay attention to. How often have you sat and listened to it. As the darkness comes do you sit and enjoy the coming of it? Do you notice what is talking as the stars start popping out one by one? Right now today have you noticed the color of the song which is spreading in fiery reds and yellows and oranges? Have you listened to the morning rise? Do you notice the sounds which announce its starting?

This is what the Psalmist is conveying today. That even when we don't stop and notice there is sound and speaking from one night to another and one day to another. C. S. Lewis and an old book I read years ago for a review both use the creation as being sung into being by the Creator. As it begins it is woven in a song we cannot hear or recognize unless we stop and listen intently to the song.

This was something my father instilled in us kids. We would sit on the deck at night and listen for the night birds. Sometimes calling to them and hearing their answer. It was the way we connected with nature, which he deeply loved. Or we would sit up to camp and call to the gorbie on the deck during the day. Seeing how close we could get it to come.

Later we would walk like a deer and cast tracks in plaster of paris to see where they ran. Checking natural salt licks in the woods or looking for the signs of a dust bath place for partridge. It was always more than just hunting it was connecting with the woods and wildlife in a way which made us a part of it. We were not separate from, but one with it and could talk with it, see its signs around us and know we were a part of the fabric of creation.

This season of Creation I hope you have made that connection as well. We are not separated from but dependent upon one another. We need only to listen deeply and hear the sound of it. Take the time to listen to the song.
