The gifts that are most precious this year
come with no wrapping or bags
no frills and trimmings
just the simple
joy of being
in one another's company
making cookies, decorating the tree
watching you giggle and squish
in the bed together
such a gift your laughter
such a gift the time spent and shared
doing nothing but listening
sharing with one another
eating, cooking, creating
yet foolishly being with one another
it is the gift, the most precious
which Mary pondered in her heart
the shepherds came and told the story
of how they were to come and see
all stored away and treasured
these rough men, yet they shared
in the story of her son's birth that night
they came bringing tidings of something
bigger than themselves
and shared the gift with Mary and Joseph
in recognizing their son
