Today we are marked with dirt: actually ashes from the Palms used last Palm Sunday. With this dirt we break barriers and erase lines of what we see and call sacred. We are stripped away and in our brokenness God speaks to us again. Telling us we are claimed as God's "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39). In other words our limited vision of God does not separate us from God's love. We are called and claimed even with all the dirt we and others have put onto ourselves. We are loved with a power that is hard to put into words. May we remember this today so we can see with God's eyes and not our limited vision the image of our Maker in all we encounter today and every day.
Today is the sacred day
where even as we acknowledge
we fail to live in the sacred ways
we are always called back to God the Creator
Young and old, all the colors blend
recognizing all that stands, all that matters
is the Love which binds our hearts
united in the call "we are dust and to dust we return"
We are not our own, we are claimed by something more
who sees beyond our eyes
which are dim with the film
of how limited our vision is
broken we open ourselves to the Divine
knowing that as we stand naked we are protected
in that most sacred song of life and Love
there is no difference in the Depth
and even with the stain
and smudge of earth
we see in each other
we are called Beloved
