Light on a hill

Across the lake the houses
stand out with light in the dark
From the hills you can see them
  nestled in, cozy, safe havens
Out in the dark you look to the
skies for light in the stars
Orienting where you are and
  where you want to be
It all needs darkness, if all
  is light then the dark
Doesn't matter and neither
  does light, the prettiest
Times are when you see the
  dark crowding in and light
At the edge in the midst
  yet we yearn to say
Everyone is light, how
can we tell if we blind
Ourselves to what is dark
  you cannot see the city
If all is light and the
  destination is lost
