Waiting

Belly round, mounded up
Movement goes on beneath
The child wrestles the cramped
Spaces of being safely
Surrounded in warmth
Expectations run high
This journey was not needed
Wanted at this stage
So much to fear, bandits
Where to sleep, how to ride
Comfortably on this donkey
Yet the babe only knows
The warmth that surrounds
Its limbs, comforted
How could God trust
Humankind with such
A treasure and yet
Time and again we wait
And dream for the ones
To come, praying they'll
Make a difference in this world
Before they die in front of us
Our hearts pierced as Mary
