Uncertain

Our lives are at best uncertain.  Control over our own lives is an illusion and a constant surrendering to God.  We do need to feel some level of control in order to navigate and live in our world.  Yet there are always things which come up and put us into the position of once again surrendering to God and realizing our lives are in God's hands.

Violence is one area in which we realize we have no control.  Our only thought is to hid, protect, and be safe in ways that we are familiar with.  This brings us to a point of surrender because it is brought into stark relief how fragile our lives are.  "You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight. Surely everyone stands as a mere breath. (Psalm 39:5)"  We surrender our life.

Illness, sickness, being in the hospital is another surrender point.  We can't take care of ourselves, our bodies don't do what we want them to, and other people order our day.  We can't make it on our own and rely on the care of others to get us better, to make us stronger, and we need to surrender our routines and bodies to them and to God.  God is the true healer.  As one wise person told me one day if we truly believe John's promise "..so that they may be one as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be completely one..." (John 17:22b-23a), then the ability to be healed resides inside us with God's help.  This has meant broadening the idea of what true healing is.  That is surrender to God.

What have you surrendered lately?
