Come, O Come

Dear God,
We pray for you to come, but we mean in our convenient, ordinary ways. We don't want the unexpected. We do not pray for you to come to a teenaged unwed mother. We do not pray for you to come in a stable, to be born homeless, your parents finding the only shelter they could. We do not pray for you to come among the poor, the unclean, the homeless, the destitute. Yet you come. O come Emmaunuel and awaken our hearts and minds to all the ways you are incarnate among us. Come and disturb our comfort, come and offer us your light so we may see our own blindness. Come and show us your love in spite of all we do not do. Come God and lift us into your arms so we may open ours wider and truly know the depths of your mercy and peace. You are our light. Amen.
